How to use Gengar against Red
- Save Gengar for Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise — those are the one-on-one trades it wins on paper.
- Avoid leaving it in against Espeon, Snorlax; switch to a teammate that covers them (see below).
- Espeon's Psychic is super effective on Gengar (143–168%), so don't switch it in on that attack.
- Snorlax's Shadow Ball is super effective on Gengar (90–106%), so don't switch it in on that attack.
- Levitate makes it immune to Snorlax's Earthquake, Venusaur's Earthquake, Charizard's Earthquake, Blastoise's Earthquake — a free switch-in on those moves.
- It beats Red's Pikachu lead: Psychic does 94–111% and it moves first.
- Leftovers heals 1/16 of max HP each turn, so it gets a bit more value the longer it stays in.
